Prince Charles
The famous 'grey goo' warning issued by Prince Charles sixteen years ago could become real, according to scientists. This comes after news emerged of particle robots being created that can unite to form a large group to move in the same way and even transport objects. The Prince had previously warned that advances in microscopic-scale engineering could lead to the creation of bacteria-sized machines with the ability of laying waste to the Earth. And scientists have admitted the nanobots do share some similarities with the goo. The nanobots can unite in large groups, move in a similar fashion and transport objects. (Image: Felice Frankel/PA Wire) The Prince's fears were taken seriously by the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering in 2003, leading to an inquiry into the potential of nanotechnology. Lord May, former Government chief scientist and then president of the Royal Society, insisted that the "grey goo" nightmare was even less likely to come true than cloning dinosaurs. Now however, US scientists have succeeded in creating simple cell-like robots that can unite in large groups, move in a similar fashion and transport objects. The robots are still too big to be considered goo-like at 15.5cm ....
